Before you buy retired

Retired LEGO sets often command premium prices on the secondary market — sometimes 1.5×–4× their original retail. A few rules of thumb:

• Sealed-box value is significantly higher than opened sets — verify packaging condition before paying premium.
• Recently retired sets (2–5 years out) often haven't fully appreciated; long-retired sets have stable, high pricing.
• Check BrickLink's “Last 6 Months Sold” data, not eBay asking prices, for realistic market value.
• Modular Buildings, UCS Star Wars, and limited Ideas releases are the most reliable appreciators.
