Where do the instruction PDFs come from?

sources

Short answer

An explanation of how LegoFinder sources building instructions and why we don't host PDFs ourselves.

Every set page on LegoFinder includes a "Get Building Instructions" button. That link points to the official PDF on LEGO.com, not a copy hosted by us.

Why we link rather than host

Building instructions are owned by the LEGO Group. The LEGO Group provides them free of charge through their official building instructions service at lego.com/service/buildinginstructions. Linking to the source is the right thing to do for two reasons:

  • The official LEGO.com files are always the most current and accurate version.
  • It respects the LEGO Group's copyright on the instruction content.

What if a set isn't on LEGO.com?

Some sets โ€” usually pre-1990 releases or limited-edition promotional sets โ€” aren't on the official site. For those, we surface the best alternative source we can find. Common ones include:

  • Rebrickable โ€” community-uploaded scans of vintage instruction booklets.
  • BrickLink โ€” instruction scans included with many vintage set listings.
  • The LEGO Building Instructions mobile app โ€” sometimes carries instructions that aren't on the website.

Are the PDFs free?

Yes. The LEGO Group has provided building instructions free of charge for decades, both as printed booklets in the box and as digital PDFs online. You should never have to pay for an instruction PDF.
