About LEGO Ninjago

LEGO Ninjago is an original LEGO theme that launched in 2011, centering on a team of elemental ninja warriors led by Master Wu. Unlike licensed themes, Ninjago was created entirely by LEGO, which has allowed the storyline to develop over 15+ seasons of an animated TV series, movies, and a rich mythology. The sets feature ninja warriors, elemental dragons, massive mechs, ancient temples, and modern Ninjago City environments. What started as a single-year theme became one of LEGO's most enduring original properties, rivaling licensed themes like Star Wars in popularity among children.

The LEGO Ninjago line spans 623 sets released between 2011 and 2026. Sets range from 1 to 6,163 pieces, averaging 290. The flagship of the line is NINJAGO City Markets (#71799, 2023) at 6,163 pieces.

History of LEGO Ninjago

LEGO Ninjago was introduced in January 2011 as an original action theme following a team of teenage ninja — Kai (fire), Jay (lightning), Zane (ice), Cole (earth), and later Lloyd (energy/green) — trained by the wise Master Wu. The theme was initially planned for a two-year run but became so popular that LEGO extended it indefinitely. The accompanying animated TV series, "Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu" (later "Ninjago"), has run for over 15 seasons, making it one of the longest-running LEGO shows. In 2017, The LEGO Ninjago Movie brought the characters to the big screen with a feature film and a dedicated wave of movie tie-in sets. The theme introduced the collectible Spinjitzu spinners, buildable dragons, and the hugely popular Ninjago City modular-style sets that appeal to adult fans. In 2022, the story evolved into the "Ninjago: Dragons Rising" era with new characters joining the core cast.
