The AI identified the wrong set — what should I do?

identification

Short answer

Why the identification can be wrong and concrete steps to get the right answer.

AI identification is highly accurate but not perfect. If the result doesn't match your set, here's how to course-correct.

Step 1: Check the alternative matches

When the AI is uncertain, it returns multiple candidates. Scroll past the top match to see the alternatives. The correct set is often the second or third option, especially for sets with similar variants (multiple Millennium Falcons, Hogwarts Castle versions, etc.).

Step 2: Try a different photo

The single most effective fix is to retake the photo. Try one or more of:

  • A different angle (slight overhead vs. straight-on).
  • Better lighting (move closer to a window).
  • A plain background (set on a wood table or sheet of paper).
  • A wider frame showing more of the set's overall structure.
  • A close-up of the most distinctive printed parts or minifigures.

Step 3: Verify against the source

If you have the original box or instruction booklet, the set number is the ground truth. Type that number into the search at the top of any LegoFinder page to go directly to the correct set.

Step 4: Check known confusion patterns

Some sets are notoriously easy to confuse:

  • Star Wars UCS vs. minifigure-scale — same ship, very different size. The AI may match the smaller version.
  • Re-released sets — LEGO sometimes re-releases a model with minor updates and a new set number.
  • Theme sub-variants — same vehicle from different waves of City or Friends.

If you suspect this, look at the year and piece count of the suggested match against what you know about your set.

Step 5: Tell us

If you're confident the identification is wrong and none of the candidates match, send us a message via the contact form with the photo and the correct set number. Reports help us improve.
