About LEGO Bionicle

Bionicle is one of the most successful original themes LEGO has ever produced. Launched in 2001, it ran for a decade as a constraction-action line — buildable poseable figures rather than traditional LEGO sets — set in an elemental mythology that LEGO developed across books, comics, films, and a video game. For a generation of LEGO fans now in their 20s and 30s, Bionicle was the formative theme.

Mechanically, Bionicle sets blend Technic pins and beams with curved armor pieces and joint connectors. The core line was the Toa — six elemental heroes — alongside their enemies, vehicles, and titanic boss characters. Most sets cost $7–25, with larger Titan-class sets running $40–60. The line is notable for cross-set lore: the figures and their weapons fit into a coherent narrative across years of releases.

Bionicle officially ended in 2010 and returned briefly with the 2015–2016 reboot, which lasted two years before being retired again. The original-generation sets (2001–2010) are now firmly in collector territory — sealed sets command significant premiums on the secondary market, and complete loose sets are sought after by the active Bionicle community.

For collectors looking to get into Bionicle: the early Toa Mata (2001) and the later Toa Inika and Toa Mahri waves are the most recognizable. For builders who want Bionicle-style construction in current LEGO, the Hero Factory line (2010–2014) used similar techniques, and modern Technic figures occasionally borrow from the same toolbox.

LEGO Bionicle is a theme buildable action figures set in an elemental mythology. The line has produced 326 sets between 2001 and 2016, with the Battle of Metru Nui (#8759) as one of its largest at 876 pieces.
