About LEGO Mindstorms

LEGO Mindstorms is the programmable-robotics line that, for two and a half decades, was LEGO's most technically ambitious product. Launched in 1998 as the original RCX, then upgraded to NXT (2006), EV3 (2013), and Robot Inventor / 51515 (2020), Mindstorms combined LEGO Technic construction with a programmable computer brick that drove motors and sensors via the user's own code.

Each generation had its own ecosystem. RCX (1998–2006) used a brick with infrared communication, rotational and touch sensors, and Visual Programming via the original RoboLab IDE. NXT (2006–2013) added Bluetooth, more sensor types, and a graphical drag-and-drop programming environment. EV3 (2013–2020) was the most popular generation by far — used widely in education and FIRST LEGO League — with a colour screen, Linux-based brick, and rich sensor lineup. Robot Inventor (2020–2022) was the final generation, aimed more at consumers, with smartphone-app programming.

LEGO discontinued Mindstorms in 2022, citing strategic focus on other lines. The legacy lives on in LEGO Education SPIKE Prime, which uses similar architecture but is sold only through educational channels rather than consumer retail. Existing Mindstorms sets — especially EV3 — remain fully functional and well-supported by an active community of educators, hobbyists, and FIRST LEGO League veterans.

For collectors and tinkerers: NXT and EV3 sets in working condition are still actively traded on the secondary market, often at prices above their original retail given the discontinuation. RCX sets are firmly vintage at this point — collectible but harder to use practically without working RCX-compatible IR towers.

For new builders interested in LEGO robotics today, the LEGO Education SPIKE Prime line is the official current path, though it requires sourcing through education resellers. Mindstorms-compatible third-party sensors and motors continue to be produced by community-friendly companies, keeping the platform alive years after its retirement.

LEGO Mindstorms is a theme programmable robotics kits combining bricks with sensors and motors. The line has produced 94 sets between 1996 and 2021, with the ROBOLAB Starter Building Set (#9780) as one of its largest at 1,712 pieces.
